Tipu Sultan
The Karnataka BJP government that made news as it cancelled the Tipu Jayanti celebrations as soon as it came to power has had one of its leaders make a controversial statement by hailing Tipu Sultan as a hero parallel to the freedom fighter Sangoli Rayanna and calling him a 'son of the soil'.
BJP MLC H Vishwanath who jumped over to the party in the defection spree that brought down the previous coalition government has lauded the tyrant Tipu as one who fought against the British.
Answering media's questions he added saying "Tipu belongs to no party or religion, but is a son of the soil. The chapter on him has only moved to class seven from class five, and not been removed."
The septegenuarian leader was an MLA from Hunsur before the mass defection which saw the former Congress and JDS MLAs disqualified, and also whose cabinet berth has been hanging in balance ever since. He was inducted as an MLC in July 2020 and has been hopeful of being made part of the state cabinet in the proposed cabinet rejig.
