Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader, C M Ibrahim has written to Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to allow Muslims in the state to offer prayers at masjids during Eid.
The letter requested the Chief Minister to consult with medical experts regarding his request before taking a call.
“In this regard, request you kindly to look into the matter and after consulting the medical experts, take a suitable decision enabling the Muslims over the State to offer Eid prayers,” Ibrahim ‘s letter noted
Ibrahim is a close associate of former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah. He was a influential minister in the union cabinet of H.D Deve Gowda. However he fell out with Gowda family and switched allegiance to Congress
Earlier last month, Karnataka government announced that it was banning the five-time congregational prayers in mosques, Dargahs, Imam Baras during the holy month of Ramzan in view of coronavirus pandemic in the state.
The state government also decided to cancel the government funded Dawat-e-Sahri or Iftar, the state-organised community feast during the religious month, in view of the highly-contagious Covid-19 outbreak.
The state also banned the use of loudspeakers to offer namaz by the staff of the mosque. ”No public shall be allowed to perform five-time congregational prayers in mosques, across Karnataka, during Ramzan, in view of Covid-19 pandemic,” Karnataka’s State Minority Welfare, Waqf & Hajj Department said in an official announcement
“No public address system to be used by the staff of mosques for offering namaz,” the order read.
