With the sessions court in Pathankot set to deliver its verdict in the Kathua rape case today (10 June), the security apparatus has been beefed up in the district and the court, reports Hindustan Times.

The rape and brutal murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on 10 January 2018 had rocked the nation, giving rise to massive uproar and demand for justice. In view of the sensitivity attached to the case, a three-tier security force has been deployed in the city, especially around the court.

In the chargesheet filed by the J&K police, it was claimed that the child had been kept in a temple in a village near Kathua where after four days of repeated drugging and raping, the girl was murdered, and the accused had dumped the body in a nearby forest.

In total, eight persons, including those who accused for trying to damage the evidence have since been held and booked under Section 302, 376, 201 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The in-camera trial of the case had culminated on 3 June post which the court had reserved its judgement and said that it will be pronounced on 10 June.
