Kaveri Issue: Opposition Parties In TN Float Idea Of Boycotting IPL

After attacking the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Anna University for being an ‘outsider’, Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu have now trained their sights on the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), reports TheNewsMinute. Led by smaller parties includuing the Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam (DVK), Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK), Viduthalai Thamizh Puligal Katchi (VTPK), Thamizhar Vidiyal Katchi (TVK) and Social Democratic Party of India so far, the anti-IPL protests have now got attention from the mainstream parties and farmers groups.
Addressing the media yesterday (6 April), Dravida Munnethra Kazhagam (DMK) working president M K Stalin said that “he wasn’t saying it shouldn’t happen” but the organisers ‘needed to understand’ the public’s feelings. Amma Makkal Munnethra Kazhagam (AMMK) founder TTV Dhinakaran meanwhile said that fans should boycott matches till the voice of farmers in the Kaveri Management Board grew stronger.
IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla said that IPL was being made a punching bag once again.
Farmer leaders said that they would create problems for the IPL if people went to to watch matches.
The water crises in Latur in 2016 had led to similar protests to ban IPL in Maharashtra before it was decided to shift all matches in the state to other parts of the country.
