In a first, Kerala Chief Minister (CM) Pinarayi Vijayan has admitted that parts of Kerala have fallen in the grip of community spread of COVID-19, reports Hindustan Times.

CM Vijayan said, "The situation is Thiruvananthapuram is really serious. In two areas, Poonthura and Pulluvila, community transmission has happened." He further added, "The coastal belt is facing a dire situation with the disease spreading very fast. We need to mobilise all our resources to deal with the situation.”

Sharing details of the development, CM Vijayan said that when 50 people were tested randomly in Poonthura, 26 had tested positive. Meanwhile, of the 57 randomly tested individuals in Pulluvila, 28 tested positive.

The State of Kerala has been witnessing an upsurge of new cases in different pockets, with highest single-day spike being observed in the State yesterday (17 July) when a total of 791 new cases emerged.

With this, the total number of cases in the State has crossed the mark of 11,000 of which more than 6,000 are active cases.

It should be noted that Kerala has so far tested less than four lakh people in total, while the neighbouring States of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have both tested triple that figure.

Meanwhile, CM Vijayan has asserted, "The number of locally-transmitted cases is increasing by the day because of negligence on the part of people. Going by the trend, one assessment is that disease control can only be achieved by the end of this year."
