Just a year after the 2018 floods that saw over 450 people dead, the coastal state of Kerala is witnessing heavy rain and flooding.
The floods in Kerala have caused 85 deaths in five days and 14 districts, and 53 remain missing even as over 2.5 lakh are lodged in the relief camps.
According to the data released by the state government, 85 people have died in 14 districts of Kerala between 8 and 12 August due to floods; 53 reported missing.
After Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan will visit the flood-affected regions of Wayanad and Malappuram.
Union minister Piyush Goyal informed that Indian Railways has announced that no freight charges will be levied on relief material sent to the flood-affected states of Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra.
“We urge you to help us in this effort and send as much relief material as possible, which we will transport for free,” he said in a tweet.
With rains subsiding in several parts of Kerala. Rescue operations continue in landslide-hit Kavalappara and Puthumala in Malappuram and Wayanad districts. While orange alert” has been issued in six districts, there’s no ‘red alert’ of torrential rains in 14 districts on Tuesday.
