In a positive development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has successfully brought back to India the key accused in Kerala's high-profile gold smuggling case, Rabins K Hameed, from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Monday (26 October), reports Hindustan Times.

In a statement, NIA said that Hameed, while being in India and UAE, conspired with other arrested accused identified as Ramees KT, Jalal AM and others. The anti-terror probe body has revealed that the accused would arrange funds, buy gold in Dubai and smuggle into India through diplomatic baggages.

As per the NIA probe, Hameed also arranged for the concealment of gold in electronics or electrical equipment and household items in the UAE, for smuggling the contraband to Kerala's capital city of Thiruvananthapuram.

It should also be noted that the case came to light when 30 kilograms of gold worth Rs 14.82 crore was seized on 5 July at the Trivandrum International Airport from a diplomatic baggage.

The 42-year-old Hameed landed at the Kochi International Airport from Dubai on Monday (26 October) and was arrested by the anti-terror probe agency. He will now be produced before a special court and the NIA will seek his custody, the statement said.
