Kolkata Metro: East-West Underground Metro Project With Sound Barriers To Be Completed By 2021

India’s first underwater tunnel, the 16.6-km Kolkata East-West Metro project will be completed by 2021 and is estimated to ferry around a million passengers a day by 2035, reports Rail Analysis India.
One of the highlights of this engineering marvel is the 520-metre twin tunnel which is built 30 metres under the Hoogly riverbed. The tunnels form the part of the Howrah-Mahakaran stretch. The trains will pass through these tunnels within a minute at a speed of 80 kmph.
The five-km stretch between Salt Lake and Howrah stations are already approved by the Railway Safety Commissioner, and will soon be operationalised. The line will have interchanges with the Howrah and Sealdah stations of the Indian Railways.
Among many firsts, the East-West Metro will have sound barriers on stretches where buildings are within 30 meters either side from the tracks. These barriers will be made of micro-perforated stainless steel sheets, informed sources.
