‘Kolkata Police Chief Must Appear Before CBI’: SC Orders Rajeev Kumar’s Full Cooperation In Chit Fund Scam

The Supreme Court on Tuesday (5 January) ordered Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning in the Saradha Chit Fund case, Times of India has reported.
The apex court while hearing a contempt petition filed by the CBI also directed Kumar to fully cooperate in the matter. The questioning though would take place at a “neutral venue”, which is believed to be Shillong.
The Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi would also issue a notice to the chief secretary, DGP and Kumar in the matter.
As reported in the media, the court has provided a relief of sorts to Kumar by ruling that he cannot be arrested but at the same time added that he has to provide all pertinent evidence to the CBI.
The CBI has claimed that the evidence which it has received including call records was either incomplete or doctored.
Th investigative agency argued before the court that Kumar’s special investigative team (SIT) had shielded guilty companies and alleged a prevalent nexus between the accused companies and the police.
CBI has claimed that this SIT had protected companies like Saradha Group, Rose Valley and Tower Group which had allegedly made large contributions to the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The central investigation agency has thus submitted before the court that there is a lot of incriminating material against senior police officials and politicians.
