Work on a 103 km-long railway line connecting Kolhapur to Vaibhavwadi in Maharashtra as part of the Konkan Railway is set to start soon, said a Press Information Bureau communique. The line will cut across the Western Ghats, connecting Kolhapur to the Konkan Coast and will have ten railway stations.

Half the cost of the new line will be borne by the Indian Railways and the remaining half will be footed by the Government of Maharashtra. The first station along the route will be inaugurated in early 2019.

The line, once completed will provide increased connectivity between southwestern Maharashtra and the coastal regions of the state. The Konkan belt features several tourist hotspots and minor ports.

The Konkan region of Maharashra has received significant attention from the Centre in the recent past. A new airport in the Sindhudurg district is also set to be operational soon.
