Ladakh region in Jammu and Kashmir is finally all set to get its first ever university reports the Indian Express. Governor Satya Pal Malik led State Administrative Council on Monday (17 December) approved the Jammu and Kashmir University of Ladakh Bill, 2018.
According to an official release, the university will receive a Government of India grant of Rs 65 Crore from the next academic year. The release adds that the university will realise a long standing demand of people living in Ladakh.
As per the 2011 census, Ladakh region has a population of 2.75 lakh, and a student population of 40 per cent. Around 90 per cent of students of Ladakh study in various universities across the country and just 10 per cent stay in Ladakh to study.
However, after the university commences operations, students in the Ladakh region will be able to pursue undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma courses in various streams and subjects.
The release adds that the university will reduce responsibility on other universities around the state and country while enabling colleges in the Ladakh region to increase their ability and become dynamic driven and quality conscious.
Along with the introduction of fundamental courses, the university will also teach specialised subjects like Mountain Studies, Environmental Studies, Climate Change Studies, Glacier and Water Studies, Geology, Sustainability and others.
