India’s premier space agency Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched the Young Scientist Programme aimed at acquainting school students with space technology. The first edition of the programme will begin this year (2019).

The programme is primarily aimed at imparting basic knowledge on space technology, space science and space applications to the younger ones with the intent of arousing their interest in the emerging areas of space activities. ISRO has chalked out this programme to “Catch them young,” noted a government release.

Three students will be selected each year from every state/union territory to participate in the programme. The students can belong to schools affiliated with CBSE, ICSE or state syllabus.

“The residential training programme will run for two weeks duration during summer vacation. Those who have finished eighth standard and currently studying in ninth standard will be eligible for the programme,” added the release.

Special Focus On Rural Students

The selection of the students will be based on academic performance and extracurricular activities and those belonging to the rural area will be given special weight in the selection criteria.
