State Bank of India (SBI) will be blocking internet banking services after 30 November for users who fail to link their primary mobile numbers to their bank accounts, Business Today has reported.

Further, if users use internet banking services without linking their mobile numbers, the bank will block their complete internet banking access from 1 December, SBI said on its website.

"Please register your mobile number by 30 November 2018, failing which your internet banking access may be deactivated/blocked with effect from 1 December 2018,” the bank said on its website. Customers will be able to avail the offline banking services at SBI branches. Account holders can retain internet services by visiting their nearest branch and linking their mobile number with the SBI account.

In another note, SBI informed customers that the older mag strip debit cards are not safe as fraudsters can clone these cards and use it for fraudulent transactions. Skimming is a common method of digital frauds where a small device is used to rob information from debit cards during a regular transaction.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines had asked banks and their customers to upgrade to the EMV (named after the original developers Europay, Mastercard and Visa) chip debit cards by end of December. SBI will be exchanging the older cards for newer and safer EMV chip cards at no extra cost.
