Sri Lankan police will seek assistance from Chinese phone manufacturer Huawei to retrieve the evidence related to the alleged assassination plot against Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, The Hindu has reported.

A court in Sri Lanka has granted permission to the police to seek help from the Chinese phone manufacturer Huawei to recover deleted data from the phone of Namal Kumara, a police informant who had exposed a plot in place to kill the President.

The informant had earlier stated that a phone discussion about the plot had happened between him and a senior police officer. Former Sri Lankan defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa was also targeted by the ‘assassin’ according to the informant.

The police submitted in the court that technical help of Huawei is needed in order to retrieve the deleted data and the evidence thus obtained can help in the investigation.

The court, on Tuesday (23 October) permitted the police to seek Huawei’s assistance in the matter. According to Sri Lankan law, police has to first seek court’s permission before engaging Huawei to help in the case.
