Maharashtra’s newest airport at Chipli-Parule in the Sindudurg District, adjacent to Goa is set to open up soon, reports MoneyControl. Over 80 per cent of the construction on the Rs 520 crore airport is complete, adds the report.

Built on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis by IRB Infrastructure and the Maharashtra Airports Development Corporation (MADC), the airport will feature a 2,500 metre-long runway and a terminal that can handle 200 arrivals and departures per hour.

According to a release 80 per cent of the work on the runway, terminal and air traffic control (ATC) tower were complete.

The airport will function as a gateway to southern Maharashtra as well as northern Goa and is expected to open up tourist locations such as beaches in the vicinity as well as the historic Sindudurg Fort – a seventeenth century fort built by Chhatrapati Shivaji that is located on an island off the coast of Malvan, reports Conde Nast Traveller.

While no airline operators have confirmed scheduled flights to the Sindudurg, it was on the list of airports to be connected under the Centre’s regional connectivity scheme (UDAN).

This will be Maharashtra’s fourteenth airport. The state has three international airports in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur.
