In a major shot in arm for the Armed Forces of the nation and indigenous manufacturing, the Government of India has signed 14 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Russian defence majors for setting up of joint ventures to manufacture a gamut of equipment and spares for the Russian military equipment used by Indian forces, reports The Hindu.

The joint ventures would manufacture a wide array of equipment from modern T-90 battle tanks to the premier Pechora air defence systems. The MoUs for the same had been signed as Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) during the 5th India Russia military industry conference held during the DefExpo 2020 in Lucknow.

The aforementioned IGA had been signed between the Governments of the two nations back in September 2019 to facilitate the joint and domestic manufacturing of spares, components, aggregates and other material related to Russian or Soviet-origin arms and defence equipment.

The development would help address the delays and lack of timely spares and support faced by the Armed Forces with respect to Russian defence equipment used by them. It should be noted that more of such agreements are presently in the pipeline are are expected to be concluded soon.
