In the revelry that takes place in Bengaluru’s central business district areas like Brigade Road, MG Road, Church Street etc, littering becomes the biggest challenge for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). This year, for the celebrations, BBMP is reportedly deploying marshals who will impose a fine of Rs 200 for littering.
About 50 marshals and health officers will keep an eye on those who litter in the aforementioned areas and in Indiranagar, Koramangala and Sanjaynagar.
BBMP Joint Commissioner for Health and Solid Waste Management Sarfaraz Khan said that the body will not tolerate those who litter, urinate on the streets. Even restaurants and pubs will be fined if they are found to be flouting rules.
Deccan Herald quoted him as saying, “Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun and BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad have directed deputing marshals and fining offenders. The mayor has called a meeting on Monday to review the steps taken to keep the city clean after New Year's celebrations.”
The aforementioned offences can be penalised up to Rs 500 under the Karnataka Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Act, 1976. So far, seven lakh rupees have been collected by marshals who fined over 8,000 people.
