West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday (18 December) said that over 1.7 crore minority community students have been awarded scholarships in West Bengal, reported Times of India.

The Chief Minister said this on the occasion of the Minority Rights day which is celebrated every year on 18 December.

Banerjee, in a tweet, dedicated to minority rights day, informed that her government has distributed the highest number of scholarships to the students belonging to the minority community.

In an another tweet dedicated to international migrants day, which is also observed on 18 December, Mamata showed her support to the cause of providing refuge to the migrants by calling it a “humanitarian obligation”.

She also said that her government is willing to take care of “anyone who seeks shelter” in West Bengal.

Mamata’s tweet has come in the backdrop of National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise in Assam excluding 40 lakh people from the final draft list which was published on 30 July this year.

In accordance with the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted on 4 December 2000, international migrants day is observed every year on 18 December.
