Five policemen who had traveled to Lavad town in Meerut district were injured after being attacked by relatives of a man, Akram, whom they had come to arrest, reports The Hindu. Akram, who is engaged in the cattle trade, is accused of stealing two bufalloes.
The policemen arrived in the town in civvies, but were unaware of a wedding taking place in Akram’s family, due to a which a large number of his relatives were present in the area. As they tried to take him into custody, the crowd pelted stones at them and the women of the family tore at the policemen’s clothes.
“Akram and his father Aslam used women as shield and they managed to get Akram freed from police custody. We had to rush in more force from other police stations to control the situation,” said SP (Rural) Avinash Pandey.
Even as Akram, who is also accused in a number of complaints of not returning people’s money, managed to escape, the police have taken into custody 11 other individuals.
