Nutrient-rich millet from Mysore has become the Army’s newfound favourite supplement, reports Bangalore Mirror.
New millet-based supplements like millet flakes, millet choco chips, ready to eat commodities like millet kheer mix, millet chapati mix, millet roti mix, millet dosa mix, millet pakora mix and millet beverage mix are now being developed by the Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) for the Armed Forces.
Millet products are gaining much popularity among the Armed Forces owing to their immense nutrient richness and health benefits, Bangalore Mirror quoted AD Semwal, associate director of DFRL, as saying.
A significant rise in the threat of lifestyle diseases has also increased the acceptance of millet-based products, said Semwal.
Millets, though popular in South, are now gaining traction in the North, where wheat and rice are staples. The high popularity of wheat and rice has made traditional millet products less attractive to the Armed Forces personnel. Therefore, it was important for institutions like DFRL to come up with innovative yet attractive products like Millet flakes and Millet cookies, Semwal added.
High-calcium and dietary fibre content makes millet dishes aid skeletal health, easing constipation and controlling lipid profile, says a DFRL report.
