Shashi Tharoor (Sonu Mehta/Hindustan Times)
While promoting his book ‘The Paradoxical Prime Minister’, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has whipped up a controversy with his ‘scorpion on a shivling’ comment, Indian Express has reported.
Tharoor was quoting an unnamed RSS functionary who had spoken to Caravan Magazine journalist Vinod K Jose. The quote was published in the Caravan Magazine article ‘The Emperor Uncrowned’.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has sharply responded to this remark. Union Minister Ravishankar Prasad tweeted, “Shashi Tharoor who is accused in a murder case has attempted to disrespect Lord Shiva. I seek a reply from Rahul Gandhi who claims himself to be a Shiva-Bhakt on this horrific denunciation of Hindu gods by a Congress MP. Rahul Gandhi must apologise to all Hindus.”
Meanwhile, Shashi Tharoor clarified his remarks on Twitter. He tweeted, “This comment (not by me) has been in the public domain for six years. RS Prasad making an issue of a six year old quote shows how little new the BJP has to offer to the nation. As for media sub-serving the BJP’s desire for “controversy”, when will this “profession” develop any self-respect?”
