Following a trial court in the United Kingdom’s request to inspect Indian jails to check if they were up to European standards for absconding liquor barron VIjay Mallya’s probable extradition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to his British counterpart Theresa May during the Commonwealth Summit held last month.

This was revealed by Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj in a press conference today (28 May). She told reporters that Modi told May that as far as Indian jails were concerned, these were the same cells where the British had kept Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.

In April, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had responded to the British court saying that the jail cell was ready and up to European standards. The Court had also admitted most of the evidecne against Mallya, giving a boost to the investigation.
