The preventive arm of the Ayushman Bharat scheme has screened over 1.3 crore people for diabetes, hypertension and common cancers like oral, breast and cervical through 10,000 health and wellness centres (HWC) in the past one year, reports Times of India.
Since the launch of the HWCs in Chhattisgarh by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April last year, a total of 10,252 have been operationalised.
Five states including Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala have almost 50 per cent of these centres.
However, the government is still short of its target of 15,000 centres in 2018-2019. It also plans to set up 25,000 centres in the new year. The government aims to establish 1.53 lakh HWCs by 2022.
The data shows over 1.30 crore people were screened to check for hypertension, 97.78 lakh were tested for diabetes, whereas 71.85 lakh were screened for oral cancer. For breast and cervical cancer, 16.67 lakh and 12.26 lakh were examined, respectively.
