Former cricketer and Congress party leader Mohammed Azharuddin has been appointed as the working president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee, with the appointment having been approved by Congress President Rahul Gandhi.
Telangana is scheduled to go for state assembly elections on 7 December, with Congress-led Mahakatumi in the fray against the K Chandrashekhar Rao’s Telangana Rastra Samithi.
Azharuddin’s cricketing career had come to an unceremonious halt after he was implicated in a match-fixing scandal in 2000 and subsequently banned for life by the BCCI.
Azharuddin, born in Hyderabad, later joined the Congress in 2009 and contested and won from the Moradabad seat in Uttar Pradesh in the year’s national elections. He, however, lost out in the 2014 general election when he contested from Rajasthan’s Tonk-Sawai Madhopur constituency. He had earlier expressed his wish to contest from the Secunderbad seat in 2019.
