The Chinese government has launched "Pair Up and Become Family" program in a Uighurs majority area Xinjiang. In the programme 1.1 million Chinese workers will be put in Uighur peoples living rooms, dining areas, Muslim prayer spaces, even funerals, weddings and other occasions once considered intimate and private, Associated Press has reported.

The Xinjiang United Front Work Department has said that the government workers would live with their assigned families every two months, for five days at a time.

The Communist Party’s official newspaper said the programme would alleviate poverty and foster bond between Uighur's and other Muslim minorities and the majority Han Chinese.

The 1.1 million cadres of “become family” programme has members not just from the Han Chinese community but also Kazakh and even from Uighur community. “We've already started calling each other family, China's 56 ethnic groups are all one family”, said Gu Li, a Uighur Cadre.

Tensions between Han Chinese and Muslim minorities has been on the rise. In a crackdown post alleged violent attacks from Uighurs, the government has put over 1 million Muslims in detention camps.

President Xi Jinping’s government also has set up surveillance and armed men at checkpoints in Uighur minority areas.
