India has surpassed vaccinating more than 16 lakh people against COVID-19 as of Sunday (24 January), with Karnataka leading the States and Union Territories (UTs) and vaccinating more than 1.9 lakh people so far, reports Times of India.
Following Karnataka, Odisha has vaccinated more than 1.5 lakh people, and Andhra Pradesh has vaccinated more than 1.4 lakh people. The total tally of people vaccinated so far stands at 16,13,667.
Meanwhile, it should be noted that on Sunday, only about 31,446 people were vaccinated in 693 sessions till 6.30pm. This comes as only five States carried out the vaccination drives on Sunday. These include Haryana, Karnataka, Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. Among the 31,446 people who were vaccinated yesterday, only 10 adverse events were reported.
The national vaccination drive against COVID-19 was launched by the Government on bygone 16 January with two vaccines having been deployed for the task - Serum Institute of India manufactured Covishield, and Bharat Biotech developed and manufactured Covaxin. Of the two, Covishield has been developed by British pharmaceutical major AstraZeneca in a collaboration with the University of Oxford.
