Local Shivsena leader Kamlesh Kadam and his five associates have been granted bail by Mumbai Police after being put behind the bars for assaulting an 65-year-old ex-Navy officer Madan Sharma in Kandivali (East) yesterday.

The cops gave the bail under a Supreme Court ruling which allows a police station to release an accused on bail if the punishment for the said crime is less than seven years.

Sharma had forwarded a cartoon on Mahrashtra’s Chief Minister Uddhav Thackarey and the three-thronged Maha Vikas Agadhi government in his society’s WhatsApp group. Soon, he received a call from Kadam as the local politician asked for the former officer’s name and address.

“Eight to ten persons attacked and beat me up today (Friday) after I received threatening calls for a message that I had forwarded. I have worked for the nation my entire life. A government like this should not exist,” Sharma described the situation to ANI.

Dr Sheela Sharma is the daughter of the navy veteran and she expressed her disappointment over Kadam securing a bail so swiftly.

“We don't know how the photo reached the Shiv Sena. We want strict action. The accused shouldn't have got bail in this way. Police personnel had come to our house and spoke of a probe on us. I oppose this bail,” she told NDTV.

Sharma’s family contacted the BJP MLA from Kandivali (East) constituency, Atul Bhatkhalkar, yesterday. The 55-year-old aided them in filing the complaint and Madan Sharma was taken to a hospital later on.
