To penetrate deeper into the Indian market and widen its customer base, Google on Thursday (1 November) announced that Google Home will now be able to respond to user queries in Hindi, as reported by Tribune.

Home is a speaker device that tightly integrates with the Google Smart Assistant to help people play music, schedule appointments and get answers from the web. It competes with Amazon’s Echo devices and Apple’s HomePod.

“Our team has been hard at work teaching the Assistant on Google Home to understand Hindi, and it will now respond to you with uniquely Indian contexts. The Assistant is already available in Hindi on your smartphone, and now you can also get hands-free help at home in Hindi to get things done in your world,” said Purvi Shah, Technical Programme Manager for the Google Assistant project.

The latest feature is in line with the company’s roadmap to introduce Hindi-capability in the device. It was launched in India in April 2018.

Lately, global tech giants have been rolling out Hindi versions of their popular services in India. In September 2018, Amazon launched its website and mobile app in Hindi. Facebook, with its objective of raining 3,00,000 Indians in digital literacy, has started Digital Literacy Library in 6 Indian languages.
