National Education Policy Reforms: Single Regulator To Be Responsible For Higher Education

The New National Education Policy (NEP) which was unveiled by the Narendra Modi led Central government has announced that a single regulator will be created for Higher Education and will be responsible for various verticals pertaining to accreditation, approvals and financing.
This single regulatory mechanism will exclude the medical and legal education streams.
The approval system will also be revamped to introduce a online self-declaration mechanism instead of the current inspection system.
The policy also aims at providing greater autonomy to affiliated colleges via a graded autonomy system.
Based on the colleges' accreditation status like A+, A and B, the institutes will get greater autonomy in terms of financial, academic and administrative regulations. The NEP will also contain a clause pertaining to a fee cap.
The policy also seeks to internationalise education to encourage student exchange program with top institutions of the world.
