Replying to questions raised by Congress MP Viplove Thakur in the Rajya Sabha over 37 suicides committed by students of Navodaya Vidyalayas over the last ten years.

Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar today (3 January) stated that the CBSE had created a committee to look into the incidents, reports The New Indian Express.

He also assured members that counsellors would be appointed to these model schools.

''Navodaya is a successful model and 37 suicides have occurred in 10 years, but there should not be any one,'' he noted, adding that the recommendations of the committee will be implemented.

Thakur asked for thorough research into the issue so that the causes of the incidents would be revealed.

On another issue, DMK MP Tiruchi Siva questioned the government on the two-language system used in the Staff Selection Commission admissions, asserting that students from a non-Hindi speaking and non-English speaking background were be denied an opportunity.

It was earlier reported that 19 students had committed suicide in Kota last year (2018), an increase from the seven and 17 suicides reported in 2017, 2016 respectively.
