Need For Speed: Nitin Gadkari Orders Early Completion Of North-East Highway Projects

Minister for Transport, Highways and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari has called for the early completion of highway projects in north-east, Economic Times has reported. The minister will be reviewing infrastructure projects in the region during his upcoming visit to Shillong.

National highway projects worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore are in progress in the north-eastern states. “The minister will review the status of each project in the presence of the state Chief Ministers, public works department (PWD) Ministers, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) and also the project contractors,” a statement from the government said.

Gadkari will also be inaugurating a 102 km long Jowai-Ratacherra section of NH-06 in Meghalaya during his visit. The project that has been constructed at the cost of Rs 683 crore will reduce the travel time between Jowai and Ratacherra to 2.5 hours from the current 4 hours. This road will enhance the economic development of the Barak Valley and the surrounding areas according to the ministry.
