Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal yesterday (11 April) said he felt the need for a White Paper that exposed the “deep rot” that has “set into the system” in Uttar Pradesh during the last 15 years, reported the Times of India. The minister was quoted by the newspaper as saying,

Goyal said this on a day when Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s second Cabinet meeting yielded decisions on enhancing the quantum of power supply to villages and district headquarters in the state.

Adityanath has also decided to sign the ‘Power For All’ pact with the centre on 14 April to make Uttar Pradesh energy-efficient by 2018 and to ensure all villages in the state have power supply by 2019.

The supply of electricity was a contentious issue between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) in the run up to the Uttar Pradesh election. The BJP alleged that the SP discriminated in power supply on religious grounds. The SP, on the other hand, claimed that Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency, received round-the-clock power supply.
