Gold bars (istara/Wikimedia Commons)
In a major development, the Delhi Zonal Unit of the Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has busted a cross-border gold smuggling gang and seized 83.6 kilograms of gold bars of 99.9 per cent purity from them at the New Delhi railway station, reports Hindu Businessline.
The 504 gold bars, worth Rs 43 crore were smuggled into India from Myanmar through the international land border at Moreh in Manipur.
Acting on specific intelligence generated meticulously and painstakingly, DRI intercepted the eight passengers who had arrived at the New Delhi railway station on Friday’s afternoon aboard the Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express.
The seized gold bars with foreign markings were found to be concealed in specially tailored vests worn by the passengers, who were all found to be travelling with fake Aadhaar cards.
It is believed that the smuggling syndicate operated out of Guwahati and that it recruited the poor and needy individuals from different parts of the country to act as carriers of the smuggled gold by promising easy and quick money.
It is also believed that the syndicate was looking to dispose of the smuggled gold bars in cities of Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai which are known to b major gold and jewellery markets.
