The World Health Organisation (WHO) has acknowledged that new evidence is emerging which suggests that the Novel Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) may also be spreading in an airborne manner, Reuters has reported.

"We have been talking about the possibility of airborne transmission and aerosol transmission as one of the modes of transmission of COVID-19", WHO's Technical Lead on Covid-19 Maria Van Kerkhove said in a media briefing on Tuesday (7 July).

As per an open letter published in the Clinical Infectious Disease, 239 scientists in 32 countries have collected evidence which suggests that inhaling airborne floating virus particles can infect an individual.

Additionally WHO's Technical Lead For infection prevention and control Benedetta Allegranzi said that, "...The possibility of airborne transmission in public settings - especially in very specific conditions, crowded, closed, poorly ventilated settings that have been described, cannot be ruled out".

WHO had earlier said that the virus quickly sinks to the ground after being expelled from either the nose or the mouth of an infected person.
