Massive protest broke out post Nirbhaya’s rape and murder. (Representative Image)
All four Nirbhaya convicts are now set to be hanged at 5.30 AM tomorrow (20 March) after a curative petition filed by one of the convicts Pawan Gupta was rejected by the Supreme Court. President Ram Nath Kovind too has refused to entertain the second mercy petition filed by Pawan Gupta and Akshay Kumar Singh, ANI has reported.
A Delhi court also ruled that no legal remedies for the convicts remain pending before any court. The convicts have also exhausted all the constitutional options available before them.
The four convicts have been trying to postpone the hanging on the pretext of pending legal remedies. "No legal remedies are pending as of now. Pawan and Akshay's second mercy was also not entertained by the President of India," Public Prosecutor Irfan Ahmad told the court.
He said President Ram Nath Kovind had entertained their first mercy plea on merits and it was given due consideration.
