The Central Committee of Chief Ministers and experts constituted by the NITI Aayog on demonetisation-related issues will hold its first formal meeting at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) headquarters in Mumbai today. The committee chairman and Andhra CM N Chandrababu Naidu said that committee will discuss several issues related to demonetisation, with the focus being transforming India to a digital economy.

This meeting should be seen in the context of a united opposition leaving no stone unturned in demanding that this decision should be rolled back for not being implemented properly. The opposition parties have also alleged that this move revealed the ‘anti-poor’ stand of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi called it a ‘foolish’ decision.

The government has suggested the use of cashless methods of payment not only to tide over the cash shortage being experienced by people due to demonetisation but also to control corruption and generation of black money in the future.
