India may see a structure rising taller than Dubai’s 163-floor Burj Khalifa on the eastern waterfront of Mumbai as part of a grand plan to give a facelift to Mumbai Port Trust’s sprawling industrial wasteland.
A dream project of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, it will feature a 7-km long green boulevard bigger than Mumbai’s Marine Drive.
Mumbai Port has already invited global tender from consulting firms for master plan and infrastructure design of the port. Gadkari, who sees the Mumbai Port Trust as the “richest landlord” of the city, said: “In Mumbai, we are the number one landlord... there are beautiful plans to develop the huge land with the port.”
The minister said that plans are ready and waiting for the Centre’s go-ahead, adding that the land will not be given to builders and investors. The proposed project includes green, smart road, and spaces for community recreation and engagement, maritime museum, marinas etc.
Gadkari said the Shipping Ministry has plans to develop other ports as well, for instance the the Kolkata Port.
