Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa

The newly sworn-in BJP state government in Karnataka led by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has ordered the Kannada and Culture Department to stop celebrating Tipu Jayanti. This decision was taken during a cabinet meeting on Monday (30 July), ANI has reported.

The erstwhile Siddaramaiah led Congress government had decided to celebrate Tipu Jayanti every year on a grand scale which led to discontent among the state’s residents. This move was vociferously opposed by the BJP who labelled Tipu as a religious bigot and opposed the Jayanti celebrations.

Tipu Sultan who ruled over the kingdom of Mysore has been accused of massacring Hindus and demolishing temples during his reign.

The JD(S) which believed that Tipu Jayanti would bring bad luck, decided to subdue the celebration after coming to power but did not stop it purportedly due to coalition compulsions.

Stopping the Tipu Jayanti celebrations was one of the major demands of BJP supporters and is now one of the first decisions taken by the Yediyurappa government.
