No Registration Charges For Electric Vehicles As Centre Intensifies Push For Their Adoption

In a bid to promote electric mobility, the Central government has moved a proposal to waive off the registration charges for the electric vehicles, reports Economic Times.
According to the report, the exemptions will apply to all the categories of electric vehicles in India. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a draft notification in this regard for comments and suggestions from the stakeholders.
“In order to give a boost to Battery-Operated or Electric Vehicles in the country, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has initiated steps for providing for differential registration fees under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989,” the Ministry of Road Transport said in a statement on Wednesday (19 June).
In this regard, the ministry has proposed to amend the rule 81 of the CMVR to exempt Battery Operated Vehicles from payment of fees for the purpose of issue or renewal of registration certificate and assignment of new registration mark.
As per the report, the move comes amid swift momentum gathering around electric vehicles in the country as the government works out a roadmap for the transition to cleaner sources of mobility.
