A division bench of Justice Siddharth Mridul and Justice Rajnish Bhatnagar of the Delhi High Court denied bail to Umar Khalid in relating to the alleged conspiracy in the Delhi Riots case.

The court quite clearly stated that there is nothing on merit in the bail appeal, and therefore dismissed the same. The court had reserved its verdict after hearing the counsel for the parties on September 9.

The arguments before the Delhi High Court went on for more than 20 days. The bail appeal challenged the dismissal of bail application by Karkardooma Court in March.

Khalid was arrested back in September 2020 for offences including criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly and various provisions of the UAPA. He is in jail since 2020.

During the first hearing only, the judges were categorical to remark that they found his speech in Amravati obnoxious and inciteful.

The court specifically asked from Khalid’s counsel as to what he meant when he used the words ‘inquilab’ and ‘krantikari'.
