Indian Students (Raj K Raj/Hindustan Times)
The issue of illegal immigration in the North-East has now captured the attention of the region’s students who have demanded that all North-East states come under the scanner of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
This issue was raised by the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) on Thursday (11 October),to checking the influx of illegal immigrants.
“The North-East is not a dumping ground for Bangladeshis,” said Sammujjal Bhattacharya, an adviser to the NESO. To buttress their demand, a NESO delegation also met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and demanded the withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
The delegation also met with Minister of State for Home Affairs - Kiren Rijiju, to raise eight issues plaguing region. NESO also requested the Minister to provide the North-Eastern states with an individual education policy.
The organisation contended that many from the North-East are forced to go to out of the region to pursue higher education due to a lack of proper educational institutions.
