At the 33rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on 14 September, India brought focus to Pakistan’s widespread use of terrorism as state policy. It also brought up the fact that Pakistan illegally occupies a large part of its territory in Jammu and Kashmir.

India pointed out that while its credentials as a peaceful, democratic, pluralistic society are well established, Pakistan is characterised by authoritarianism, an absence of democratic norms and widespread human rights violations across the country including Balochistan.

At the forum, India exposed how Islamabad uses the air power against its own citizens and indulge in systematic abuse and violation of the human rights in various parts of the country.

India said that while Pakistan’s own citizens in Balochistan face a relentless onslaught from its military, the people in its occupied territory in Kashmir have also become victims of sectarian conflict, terrorism and extreme economic hardship.

“We are dealing with a state that regards the use of terrorism as a legitimate instrument of statecraft.....the consequences of Pakistan’s actions have spread beyond its immediate neighbor. All of us stand prepared to help, if only the creators of this monster wake up to the dangers of what they have done to themselves,” India said.

It also reminded the UN forum that Pakistan continues to provide sanctuary to UN-designated terrorists.
