The Manohar Lal Khattar government in Haryana has decided to accord legal status to illegally constructed commercial buildings in the State, reports Dainik Jagran. In a meeting of the cabinet on Wednesday, a decision was also taken to deem as legal those commercial activities which were located in residential areas.

Businesses and industries in Haryana had been trying to obtain a legal status for commercial buildings which were constructed without due clearance of plans from the municipal authorities. Owners of such buildings now would be given two years from the date of issue of the Cabinet notification of the order to apply for a legal status. Prior to this, they would also need to deposit a determined amount of fees with the authorities.

After their applications have been processed, such establishments would be deemed legal for ten years. In this interim, they would have to fulfill the requirements of building bylaws and code.

Commercial establishments in residential areas will get a permit from the State government but would have to fulfill certain criteria. Such establishments would be only be permitted in areas which have been occupied up to 60 per cent or more. In new residential colonies, commercial establishments would only be allowed to function in predesignated spaces.
