Ramesh Chennithala, Congress MP and leader of the Opposition in Kerala assembly has hit out at the CPM-led government in the state for the floods calling the calamity a ‘man-made’ disaster, Hindustan Times has reported.

Chennithala slammed the state Power Minister M M Mani and Water Resources Minister Thomas Issac saying the the duo failed in coordinating the release of water from several dams in the state leading to the large parts of the state getting flooded.

He also said that no warning was given prior to the water being released from the dams and people could not be shifted to safer areas. Over 300 deaths have been reported in Kerala due to the floods, being called as the worst flooding the state has faced in a century.

Several agencies have termed the floods as ‘man-made’ including the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president V D Satheesan. “It is not a natural calamity. It is a man-made disaster,” he has been quoted as saying in the report.

Chennithala has also demanded a judicial probe into the alleged mishandling of the situation while slamming KSEB officials of having tried to profiteer from it.

Kerala has received rainfall that is 34 per cent more than normal till now during the current south-west monsoon that began on 1 June with financial losses from the flooding being pegged at over Rs 20,000 crore.
