The East-West metro in Kolkata is all set for its penultimate inspection by Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) after which it can operationalise its services along the six km stretch.

A RSDO team from Lucknow has been sent to Kolkata to inspect the Metro rakes, tracks, electrification and other facilities between Sector V and Salt Lake Stadium on Thursday. RSDO is a wing under the Ministry of Railways that inspects the technical aspects of new railway projects.

Post the RSDO testing, Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) will seek permission from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) to carry out their own safety tests. Once KMRC gets an approval from CMRS, the E-W metro can begin its commercial operations.

“Once East-West Metro gets RDSO clearance, it will need two more approvals,” explained an official, adding, “RDSO will issue speed certificate, which will be sent to Railway Board and then to CMRS to conduct the final inspection,” as reported by TOI. CMRS will also test the staff on how trained and capable they are for being a part of the highly automatised East-West Metro’s operations.

Over the last few days, the RSDO team has been travelling in trains and holding meetings regularly. Post a break between 5 and 9 November, the inspection will go on till 17 November.
