Odisha Farmers Protest In Front Of Assembly, Demand Hike In MSP, Pension For Sexagenarians

After the Communist-led Kisan March in Mumbai, farmers in Odisha reached the state assembly in Bhubaneswar with demands of their own, reports PTI. Farmers from different corners of the state came under the banner of the Navnirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS) on a dharna demanding an increase in the minimum support price (MSP) of paddy to Rs 5,000 per quintal.
They also demanded pension for the state’s farmers – numbering 36 lakh – at Rs 5,000 per month once they turn 60. Farmers currently do not receive any pension. NKS convener Akshay Kumar said that the agitation would increase only if the demands of the farmers are met.
Odisha goes to polls in May 2019 and the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD)‘s hold over the state seems to be slipping slowly.
