Former CJI RM Lodha. (Times of India)
The former Chief Justice of India (CJI) RM Lodha was cheated by an online fraudster who hacked into the email account of one of his fellow colleague and retired judge of the Supreme Court, reports The Hindu.
According to the complaint filed by Lodha with the Delhi Police, he received an email from the hacked email of his colleague asking for some urgent help over email given he was unavailable over the phone on 19 April 2019.
Justice Lodha was told in the email that the colleague's cousin was suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and he was short of funds. Masquerading to be former CJI Lodha's colleague, the fraudster requested him to transfer a sum of Rs 1 lakh and shared the details of the surgeon’s bank account.
Former CJI Lodha assured that he would transfer transfer the money at the earliest. Thereafter he transferred Rs 50,000 to the mentioned account in the morning, and another Rs 50,000 in the evening.
It was finally on 30 May when he received an email from his colleague that during the intervening night of 18-19 April his email account had been hacked by some miscreant, who used it to impersonate him and garner benefits.
