Outrage Against Rajiv Gandhi Continues: Name On Signboards In Panjab University Blackened By Unknown Persons

Four signboards carrying the name of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in Panjab University were besmirched with black ink on Friday (28 December), reports Tribune India.
North Zone Youth Fest, which hosted teams from 34 universities, started on Friday with Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Badal in the university to inaugurate it.
Prof Ashwani Koul said that the university had got to know about two signboards where similar actions were carried out, but they were cleaned before the youth fest began. It was only afterwards that the authorities got to know that two more signboards near Rajiv Gandhi College Bhawan were targeted, one of which was near Boys’ Hostel Number 4 and another near Ankur School.
The police and National Students Union of India (NSUI), who reached the spot, cleaned the boards with kerosene.
Manoj Lubana, the national coordinator of NSUI, said, “Acts like these are symbolic of cowardice and are definitely in pursuance of a political agenda. Proper investigations should be carried out, and the miscreants brought to book so that acts like these don’t happen again.”
The Chief Security Officer of the university said they would submit a complaint with a case under the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 2007 being registered against unidentified persons at the Sector 11 police station.
Professor Koul condemned the act, saying they could not identify the culprit due to the fest happening on the same day. He said that even though they had 250 cameras, they could not monitor everywhere and were looking at available footage to find a clue. The police validated the lack of closed-circuit television cameras near the spot.
