Proposed over forty years ago by the armed forces, the National War Memorial honouring our fallen soldiers is finally ready, India Today has reported.

It is likely to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 February. It is located at the ‘C Hexagon’ of the India Gate Circle in New Delhi.

The memorial will have inscribed the names of all the soldiers who have laid down their lives for the nation in Independent India.

Pending under subsequent governments. the war memorial was finally approved by the Narendra Modi led Government in 2015.

The memorial has been designed in the form of four concentric circles around the main obelisk shaped like the Dharmachakra.

In the first Chakra named as Amar Chakra, will burn an eternal flame. The next Chakra, the Veerta Chakra will describe the six battles India fought post-Independence.

The third Chakra, the Tyaag Chakra has the names of more than 22,000 fallen Indian soldiers on granite plaques.

Finally the Raksha Chakra which is a circle of trees depicts a soldier protecting the nation. It will also house a bust engraved with the names of all Param Vir Chakra winners.
