Pakistan: After Widespread Protests, Sikh Girl Abducted, Forcibly Converted To Islam To Be Returned To Her Parents

In a video shared on Twitter by Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Manjinder S Sirsa, the latter informed the Sikh girl who was allegedly abducted on gunpoint and forced to convert to Islam shall be returned to her parents.

The girl, daughter of a ‘granthi’ (priest) at Gurudwara Tambu Sahib, was abducted by one of her classmates, Babar Aman, along with Mirza Dilawar, a member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party founded by current Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan. Reportedly, Aman is affiliated to 2008 Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed’s proscribed outfit Jama’at-ud-Da’wah (JuD).

There were widespread protests after the incident. not only in Pakistan but also abroad.

In the video, Sirsa thanked the Government of India and people for overwhelming support on the issue. He stressed that the fight is not only about the particular girl but also a fight for all Hindu and Sikh girls who are facing the threat of forceful conversion to Islam and are being forcibly married to Muslim men.

Sirsa also released a list of 31 Hindu and Sikh girls who were abducted forcefully, converted to Islam and then married to Muslim men during last two and a half months in Pakistan.

On the other hand, a video released by the Governor of Punjab, Pakistan Mohammad Sarwar showed the father of the girl along with the father of the boy at governor’s residence. The governor said that the government had noted that worldwide the Sikh community was troubled, upset and angry over the incident.

The father of the boy further spoke in the video that they will not lay any claims on the girl and her family can take her back. However, the father of the girl was not allowed to speak, instead the mediator spoke on their behalf, and thanked the Pakistan government for resolution of the issue.

Meanwhile, there are no updates on the Hindu girl abducted less than two days after the Sikh girl case.
